In medical terms there is no such thing as “detoxing”. But it`s pretty hard not to get sucked into the whole thing when you have a full working industry behind it. The idea of washing you system from calorific sins is the perfect antidote to our fast-food lives. Detox is a pseudo-medical concept invented to sell you things with a smiling model sitting next to a pile of vegetables.
According to Edzard Ernst (a professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University), there are 2 types of detox: One is a medical term used for people with serious drug addictions and the other is only a word used by charlatans for selling treatments that allegedly clean your body from accumulated toxins.
Edzard continues to make sense when clearing up that our body has more than enough systems (like kidneys, skin, liver and lungs) that are constantly detoxifying, even as you read this article. Until this day there is no know treatment to upgrade something (our body) that is already working perfectly.
All commercials are constantly taking about “toxins” but without a clear world of what they really are, without naming them so they can be properly measured in a before and after test. Whenever scientists ask for evidence (like in the case of 2009 UK charity Sense about Science) from manufactures not even a single one could really define what are the names of the toxins and what they meant when they use the word detoxification.
Yet even today tons of shelves of health food stores are packed with detox products like face masks, bath salts, hair brushes, shampoos, detoxifying tablets, tinctures, and tea bags. There are even yoga classes, detoxing foot pads that turn brown over night, massages and luxury retreats that will help you lose weight but all together has nothing to do with toxins even if you starve for a week. All in all its a “criminal exportation of the gullible man and it`s a scandal” fumes Ernst.
There is a lot of money evolved in the detox industry and the marketing that surrounds them. Any person who says: I have a detox treatments” is definitely profiting from a false claim which makes him a crook.
